Captain Richard Fink of the Riley County Police Department was recognized for his service to crime victims during this week’s Crime Victim’s Rights Conference in Wichita.
Fink was presented the Outstanding Criminal Justice Victim Service Award by Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt during an awards ceremony this morning.
“If all police officers shared Rich’s concern for victims and diligence in seeing good outcomes for victims, there would be fewer victims among us and more offenders in prison,” said Brad Schoen, director of the Riley County Police Department. “He understands the importance of believing victims and working hard to resolve their cases in a manner sensitive to their needs while still building excellent criminal cases.”
Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson credits Fink’s leadership as enabling “the county attorney’s office to obtain 25-to-life sentences without putting victims through the trauma of testifying at trial.”
The Kansas Crime Victims Rights Conference was hosted by Attorney General Schmidt and Governor Sam Brownback. The conference featured a number of speakers and trainers focused on raising awareness of emerging crimes and offering new approaches to respond to enduring crimes, such as child abuse, domestic violence and human trafficking.
