Winter sports will proceed with some extra precautions the next few weeks after the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s Board of Directors voted to not delay the season.
Among those precautions, no fans will be allowed from Dec. 1 through Jan. 28. For wrestling, some significant changes will be coming forward, according to USD 378 Riley County Superintendent Cliff Williams.

The decision by the KSHSAA board of directors, allows basketball teams to play more than 80 percent of their original schedule. Winter sports begin on Tuesday.
Both superintendents also reflected on some things they are thankful for this holiday season.
For Williams, it’s the fact that COVID-19 positive infection rates have remained relatively low within the district buildings.

Quarantines have fluctuated, but contact tracing has shown infections largely aren’t happening within the school setting but rather from community spread elsewhere, according to Williams.
At USD 384 Blue Valley Schools, the year began a bit rocky, with an outbreak identified in the district office. The district has been able to maintain a low positive rate for the duration of the semester.

School resumes both in person and remotely on Monday at both districts.
