Kansas State University is hosting a “celebration of life” in honor of the university’s storied basketball coach Fred “Tex” Winters on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Bramlage Coliseum.
Winters, who was 96 when he died on October 10, was head coach of the K-State men’s basketball team from 1954 to 1968 and is known for innovating the “triangle offense” during his six-decade career. He won eight conference championships, made it to two NCAA final fours and produced four All-Americans with K-State. Winters also won 11 NBA Championships as an assistant coach to Phil Jackson for both the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers.
A receiving line will be in the Legends Room of the Coliseum for visitation before the ceremony. Attendees will enter through the Northwest entrance and doors open at noon. Parking is available on the West side of the arena.
The Winters family has asked the focus to remain on Tex and will not be conducting interviews. People wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to donate to the Big Lakes Development Center or to the Boys and Girls Club.
