The Wamego City Commission approved a multi-jurisdictional plan. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page said he was approached by a company to participate in the planning process for a Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. He added that a consultant was brought on board and the plan is complete, with no time frame included. According to Page, this is just a resolution to participate and could require an investment in a community shelter if it is identified as a need. Commissioner Bill Ditto felt the City needs to cooperate with this. The resolution was passed by a vote of 5 to 0.
In other business, Page said he attended a EMP3 (Energy Management Project 3) meeting through the Kansas Municipal Energy Agency, and the one thing that peaked his interest was the current wind projects that he felt should be investigated. He said wind energy is economy driven. He said participation would make 1 and a half (1 ½) mega watts of electricity available to the City of Wamego. He asked the Commission for authority to sign the ‘indicator of interest’ document. He reiterated the City is not bound by any agreement. He was given the authority.
The commission took care of several board appointments and renamed both John and Jason Hupe to the Airport Board, with a term that expires September 3, 2019. There were two applications for the Recreation Advisory Board, but only one position open. The applicants were Daniel Tidwell and Mitch Fillimore. Mayor Cliff Baughman nominated Tidwell for the position, which expires February 1, 2020, and thanked Fillimore for applying.
The Planning Commission has three positions expiring and the Commission appointed Robert Owens, Norm Delay, and Carl Riblett, with terms that expire August 31, 2019.
City Manager Page said the Construction Board of Appeals is based on construction disciplines and is comprised of contractors and one engineer. Those named were Eric Artzer, Plumbing; Charles Davis, Electrical; and Justin Vieux, Mechanical, whose terms expire September 3, 2019. Also named was Paul O’Dell, Plumbing (term expires 9/3/2017) and Devin Timm, General Contractor (term expires 9/3/2019). All appointments were approved by a vote of 5 to 0.
And the commission received the letter of completion for the Columbian Theatre project. Architect Bruce McMillan and his Associate appeared before the Commission with a letter of completion and a final change order. The contract had a $10,000 contingency fund built in and they used all but $68 of the fund. The total cost of the project came to $191,097 and the paperwork is waiting for signatures.
In other business, City Manager Merl Page sought a proposal for shirts for the Recreation Programs and recommended going with Stewart Sports of McPherson, KS again. Approval was given by a vote of 5 to
0.
Page brought up the Power Plant Open House again and suggested coordinating it with the Fire Departments Open House on the same day, October 9th. Everyone agreed.
According to Page, the City of Wamego received an award for being the 9th Safest City in Kansas from Safewise.
