The Manhattan City Commission unanimously approved two rezoning requests Tuesday, clearing the way for a new Planet Fitness location on the city’s east side and advancing plans for the proposed Yuma Street Cultural Center.
Commissioners unanimously approved rezoning property north of the intersection of East Poyntz Avenue and Sarber Lane from neighborhood commercial to a commercial planned unit development (PUD).
Planning director Stephanie Peterson said the Planet Fitness project would redevelop part of the existing commercial center near Academy Sports + Outdoors and Goodwill. The proposal calls for demolishing a portion of the existing L-shaped building and constructing a standalone Planet Fitness while retaining the remaining buildings on the site.
