Stovetop fire causes $135,000 in damage at Manhattan apartment complex

A stovetop fire caused an estimated $135,000 in damage and displaced a family of four Thursday morning at a Manhattan apartment complex.

The Manhattan Fire Department responded at about 10:51 a.m. to Woodway Apartments, 2421 Woodway Drive, where firefighters found smoke coming from the second floor of the three-story building.

Crews located and quickly extinguished the fire and searched the apartment. The fire was declared under control just after 11 a.m.

No injuries to people or pets were reported. The apartment’s residents were not home when the fire began. Maintenance personnel spotted the smoke and called 911.

A fire department investigator determined the fire was accidental and originated on a stovetop. Damage was estimated at $125,000 to the structure and $10,000 to the apartment’s contents.

The unit was declared uninhabitable, displacing two adults and two children. The American Red Cross responded to provide assistance.
