Nearly 300 large hay bales were burning or smoldering Saturday morning as firefighters responded to a fire in southeastern Geary County.

Geary County Rural Fire and Dwight Fire were called shortly after 7 a.m. to Stahl Road, where crews found about 294 large bales affected by the fire. Residents were attempting to move bales that had not caught fire.

Nearby farmers brought in heavy machinery to move the burning bales to an open area east of the fire. Fire crews were positioned along the route to spray the machinery and prevent its hydraulic lines from catching fire.

Geary County Rural Fire cleared the scene at about 10:15 a.m., while Dwight Fire remained to finish operations.

The estimated loss was not immediately known.
